First Time Hiring a Supercar? 10 Tips You Need to Know

Everything you need for a stress-free first experience.

Hiring a supercar for the first time is exciting but it can also be a bit nerve-wracking. These aren't ordinary cars. They're louder, lower, faster and more powerful than anything you've probably driven before. Here are 10 tips to make sure your first experience is unforgettable for all the right reasons.

1. Check the Age Requirements

Most Melbourne supercar hire companies require you to be at least 25 years old. Some will hire to drivers aged 21 to 24 with an additional surcharge and higher excess. You'll need a full Australian licence or a valid international licence with an English translation.

2. Understand the Deposit

Every hire requires a security deposit held on a credit card. For a typical supercar like a Lamborghini Huracán, expect a hold of $5,000 to $10,000. This isn't charged. It's a pre-authorisation that's released after the car is returned undamaged. Make sure your card has enough available credit before pickup day.

3. Know Your Insurance Options

Standard hire includes comprehensive insurance with an excess. That excess is typically $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the car. Many providers offer excess reduction for an additional daily fee (usually $100 to $200). For peace of mind on your first hire, it's worth paying for.

4. Take the Vehicle Walkthrough Seriously

When you collect the car, the team will walk you through everything. How to start it. Where the indicators are (they're not always where you'd expect). How to engage reverse. How to adjust the mirrors and driving modes. Pay attention. Take your time. Ask questions. Nobody's judging you.

5. Start Slow

Resist the urge to floor it the moment you leave the car park. These cars have serious power and very responsive throttles. Spend the first 20 minutes getting comfortable with the brakes, the steering weight and the clutch point (if it's a manual or automated manual). The confidence will come naturally.

"The best first-time supercar experience isn't about going fast. It's about feeling connected to something extraordinary and building up to it gradually."

6. Watch the Ground Clearance

Supercars sit extremely low to the ground. Speed bumps, driveways, car park ramps and even some gutters can scrape the front lip or underside. Take speed bumps at an angle if possible. Approach steep transitions slowly. This is the single most common cause of damage on hire cars.

7. Plan Your Route in Advance

Don't waste half your hire time stuck in Melbourne CBD traffic. Plan a route that gets you onto enjoyable roads quickly. The Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Great Ocean Road are all within 90 minutes of the city. A pre-planned route means more time actually enjoying the car.

8. Check Your Kilometre Allowance

Most hires include 150 to 200 kilometres per day. Extra kilometres cost $3 to $5 each. That might not sound like much, but it adds up fast on a road trip. If you're planning a big drive, ask about extended kilometre packages when you book.

9. Fuel Requirements

Supercars run on premium unleaded (98 RON). You'll need to return the car with the same fuel level as pickup. Budget for fuel as these cars aren't exactly economical. A Lamborghini Huracán uses around 13 to 15 litres per 100km in real-world driving.

10. Capture the Moment

Bring a friend who can take photos and video while you drive. Most hire companies are happy for you to photograph the car at scenic locations. Some even have recommended photo spots. Just don't try to film yourself while driving. Pull over, set up the shot, and make the most of it.
