Five incredible routes that deserve a special car.

Victoria has some of the best driving roads in Australia. Winding coastal stretches, alpine passes, vineyard-lined valleys. These roads were made for something special. Here are the five best supercar drives around Melbourne, plus tips on which car to take and when to go.

1. The Great Ocean Road

Australia's most famous coastal drive is even better in a supercar. The stretch from Torquay to Apollo Bay is roughly 115 kilometres of sweeping bends, ocean views and rainforest canopy. It's the kind of road that makes you glad you opted for something with a bit of power.

Best car: Porsche 911 Turbo S or McLaren 720S. The tight, technical sections reward precision rather than brute force.

Distance from Melbourne: 100km to Torquay (roughly 90 minutes)

Tip: Leave early on a weekday to avoid tourist traffic and caravans. The road is much more enjoyable before 9am.

2. Yarra Valley Loop

Start in Healesville and loop through the valley's rolling green hills. The roads between wineries are smooth, well-maintained and beautifully scenic. It's a more relaxed drive than the coast, but no less enjoyable.

Best car: Ferrari Roma or Bentley Continental GT. Something grand touring that matches the refined atmosphere.

Distance from Melbourne: 60km to Healesville (about an hour)

Tip: Combine with a long lunch at one of the valley's cellar doors. The drive is better when you're not in a rush.

3. Mornington Peninsula

The coastal roads around Portsea, Sorrento and Red Hill offer a mix of beachside cruising and hilly vineyard routes. It's close to Melbourne, easy to do in a half day, and the roads are quiet enough to actually enjoy the car.

Best car: Lamborghini Huracán or Ferrari 488 GTB. The open, flowing roads suit something with real presence.

Distance from Melbourne: 75km to Portsea (about 90 minutes)

Tip: Continue around to Cape Schanck for dramatic clifftop views and some genuinely fun corners.

4. Black Spur Drive

The Black Spur between Healesville and Marysville is one of Victoria's great hidden gems. Towering mountain ash trees line both sides of the road, creating a natural cathedral of forest. The road itself is smooth, technical and deeply satisfying to drive.

Best car: McLaren 720S or Porsche 911 GT3. This is a proper driver's road that rewards engagement.

Distance from Melbourne: 80km to the start (about 75 minutes)

Tip: Continue through to Lake Mountain for an extra hour of alpine road. Watch for wildlife in the early morning and late afternoon.

"You haven't really experienced a supercar until you've driven one on a road that matches its abilities. Victoria has plenty of them."

5. Mt Buller Alpine Road

Outside of ski season, the road up to Mt Buller is one of the most thrilling drives in Victoria. It climbs from Mansfield through alpine forest with constant elevation changes, tight switchbacks and stunning mountain views. The road surface is good and traffic is light outside winter.

Best car: Lamborghini Aventador or Porsche 911 Turbo S. The altitude and straights suit something with real power.

Distance from Melbourne: 230km to Mansfield (about 2.5 hours)

Tip: Make it a weekend trip. Stay in Mansfield or Merrijig overnight and take the drive at sunrise the next morning.

Planning Your Supercar Road Trip

For any of these drives, make sure your hire package includes enough kilometres. The Great Ocean Road and Mt Buller routes will eat through a standard 200km daily allowance quickly. Ask about extended kilometre packages when you book.

Multi-day hires are ideal for the longer routes. You'll save per day and won't feel rushed to get back to Melbourne by a certain time.
